Description: In this episode, Michelle is joined by Lisa Young Milliken, MA, CCC, FNAP, CDP, who received her BA from Louisiana Tech University and her MA from The University of Memphis in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. Have you had questions regarding that laundry list of medications that your pediatric patient is taking? No fear and no shame from us here at First Bite….because we have had the same questions too! Did you know that certain common medications for GERD and seizure management could trigger oropharyngeal dysphagia, trigger constipation, or result in bone density issues? As Clinicians we need to understand how the medications that our patients are taking can impact their hunger cues and desire for PO trials, or contribute to safety issues for PO intake…and Lisa is here to clarify the muddy waters that are pediatric medications.
Objective
By the end of this PodCourse, participants will be able to identify and describe:
- How typical drug classes that may result in adverse effects in children’s swallowing or cognitive skills.
- 3 impacts to the GI system and hunger cues that common GERD medications (PPIs/H2RAs) can have on the body.
- 3 ways in which seizure medications such as (Keppra, Onfi, Dilantin), impact cranial nerves for swallowing disorders.

Lisa Young Milliken, MA, CCC, FNAP, CDP
Lisa Young Milliken received her BA from Louisiana Tech University and her MA from The University of Memphis in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology. She has since served as a clinician, manager, vice president, consultant, compliance manager and education director, and is most passionate about mentoring healthcare professionals across the country. She currently provides continuing education and support to therapists and customers in over 900 sites nationwide as Education Specialist for Select Rehabilitation. She has authored and lectured at the national and state level with over 200 professional continuing education courses on a wide range of topics of importance to the healthcare professional.
Lisa is a Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice, where she is a Member of the Forum Planning Committee and serves as Co- Chair of the Networking Subcommittee and Co- Chair of Education/Training and Practice Partnerships. She is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), where she currently serves as a State Advocate for Medicare Policy (StAMP) for Texas. She also serves on the Texas Speech-Language and Hearing Association (TSHA) Executive Council, and on numerous committees for this organization to include Councilor for TSHA Professional Services, TSHA Medical Committee, TSHA Business Management Committee, TSHA Finance Advisory Committee and the TSHA Publication Board. She is a prior board president of the Louisiana Speech-Language and Hearing Association (LSHA) and a past member of the Council of State Association Presidents (CSAP). In addition, she volunteers with community-wide programs in the Houston area to support caregivers of family members with a variety of health challenges.
